Liverpool fans were left fuming after ITV News presenter Rageh Omaar said it was "regrettable" that they were top of the Premier League.

The presenter was providing an update on Thursday's sport and had to address the Reds' win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Omaar's affection for the Gunners is well known and he didn't hide his feelings as he told viewers that Liverpool's win took them back to the summit.

The Blades had looked to cause an upset when they equalised in the second-half thanks to a Conor Bradley own goal. Two goals in the final quarter from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo sealed the three points though.

He said: "To sport now and the tussle for the Premier League title is still as close as anything after Liverpool returned to the top of the table. They beat bottom club Sheffield United 3-1. Alexis Mac Allister got the goal that turned the game, so Liverpool are, regrettably, two points clear of Arsenal."

Arsenal, who had seen off Luton Town on Wednesday, are two points further behind as the title race continues to be hotly contested. Omaar's comments have proved divisive though with several fans taking issue with the presenter making his allegiance known.

One person said: "He's a newsreader, his opinion is not required!". Another claimed: "He was not hiding his disappointment at Liverpool returning to the top of the table using the word regrettably". A third added: "A totally unnecessary comment".

Those connected with the north Londoners though have heaped praise on Omaar after he nailed his colours to the mast. One fan claimed: "Always liked you as a newsreader, and now I find out you're a Gooner too".

Liverpool and Arsenal both face daunting away trips this weekend with Manchester City, who are sat waiting for a mistake, taking on Crystal Palace in London. The Gunners head south to face Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex whilst Liverpool take on Manchester United.

A slip for either of the trio will open the door for their two rivals with eight games still to play. All three sides also have European commitments to contend with as the Champions League and Europa League resumes in midweek.

Jurgen Klopp said on the battle at the top: "So, if it's a tight race then the best place you can be is in it. We are in it and that's cool, that's good. And now let's keep fighting, that's how it is. Obviously the next one is the big one, like they all are."
