There's also a 15p cleaning hack to get rid of kettle limescale

BBC’s Sort Your Life Out is not only decluttering houses, but sharing easy cleaning tips.

In a previous episode, Stacey Solomon and her team were trying to organise one home, and it was the job of Iwan Carrington to clean the kitchen and bathroom.

But when doing so, he came across a thick build up of limescale around the taps and sink.

He commented: “We’ve got some limescale going on around the tap.

“But I’m very excited to tackle this because it does come up really easy.”

The first thing he suggested was: “Soak a cloth in some white vinegar.

“Then pop the cloth around the tap, covering the limescale, and that will start to get to work.”

Vinegar is acidic meaning it will break down the limescale.

It’s also really cheap and non-toxic - so good for your purse and planet!

“While that’s doing it’s thing, I’m going to mix up a paste to scrub the sink with,” he added.

“I’m going to use some salt, lemon juice and I’m going to add a little bit of bicarb as well.

“Then start to apply this - oh my God, it smells so good!” Iwan remarked.

Just like vinegar, lemon is acidic and will break down the limescale.

It can also help mask the strong smell of vinegar.

After a couple of minutes, it’s time to take a look under the cloth.

He continued: “You can go in with an old toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crannies,

“Look at the difference - that, compared to this side!” And the side he had cleaned was sparkling - with no limescale.

The clip, which had been posted to the BBC’s TikTok account, had been liked thousands of times and many shared what they use to remove limescale.

Someone with the username @nicola smith962 remarked: “Just use Viakal.”

Another with the username @Post2gary wondered: “Doesn’t Viakal do the same thing?”

Viakal is a powerful bathroom limescale remover spray.

Whilst it’s “free from chlorine, ammonia, bleach”, it has a really strong smell and can overpower a small bathroom, so use with care.

60 percent of the UK has hard or very hard water, so limescale is a problem for many households.

What is limescale?

As for what limescale is, it is a “a hard, chalky deposit, consisting mainly of calcium carbonate”.

It is most commonly found inside kettles, boilers, and pipework, especially that for hot water.

If you’ve spotted limescale inside your kettle, it’s really easy to remove it.

How to get rid of limescale in a kettle?

Fill the kettle with half water and half white vinegar and leave overnight.

In the morning, the limescale will rinse out easily. Rinse thoroughly to remove any vinegary odours.

Or fill the kettle half way and pop half a lemon inside and boil.

Lemons cost around 30p each so it's an affordable method.

Once cool, pour the water out - repeat until all limescale has dissolved. Then boil a full kettle of water and pour out to ensure the next couple of tea doesn’t taste of lemon!
