Pierce Brosnan said Cillian Murphy should be the next James Bond.

Brosnan, 70, who starred as the 007 agent in four Bond films from 1995 to 2002, said the Irish actor would be great in the role of 007. He said: "Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service."

However, Murphy doesn't seem willing to take on the role. He said: "I'm a bit too old for that."

Both Irish actors attended the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday night, where Brosnan was honored with an award for his "rich and extensive career in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes as a producer."

The awards, which celebrate the achievements of Irish actors and filmmakers, were held at Bad Robot. Roma Downey presented Brosnan with the award. Brosnan played Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. Sean Connery, who was born in Scotland, had Irish heritage as his ancestors left Ireland for Edinburgh in the mid-19th Century.

Paul Mescal, who recently wrapped filming on the Gladiator sequel, is also rumored to be in talks to star as the next James Bond. The actor is among those interested in taking over the role from Daniel Craig, who quit playing the suave secret agent after his fifth film, No Time to Die.

Murphy has been getting much praise after being the lead to Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. The film is currently nominated for 13 Academy Awards, which will air on Sunday. Murphy is up for Best Actor against Paul Giammatti for his role in The Holdovers, Bradley Cooper for Maestro and Colman Domingo. He also won Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture at the 2024 Golden Globes. Murphy is also known for his roles in 28 Days Later, Inception and Sunshine.

Oppenheimer made headlines when it premiered the same day, July 21, 2023, as Barbie, causing Barbenheimer mania. People would purchase tickets to see both movies right after another. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer were expected to break records and just in its opening weekend, it became the fourth-largest at the box office and ranked among the highest-grossing films of 2023.
