Most people have their favourite sandwich, and it turns out that the Royal Family are pretty fussy when it comes to enjoying a butty - only for them it isn't simply a matter of personal preference.
A former royal chef has claimed that the Windsors, including Kate, the Princess of Wales, will never eat a square sarnie, and the strange habit comes from a pretty archaic origin.
The former chef - Graham Newbould- explained that Kate and the other royals avoid this kind of sandwich at all costs because of old, creepy superstition. Newbould, who worked at Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace, per The Sun, explained the unusual rule in a documentary called Secrets of the Royal Kitchen.
"The royals never have square sandwiches because tradition has it that anyone presenting them with pointed-edged food is trying to overthrow the throne of England," the chef explained. He added that in all his years working for the royals, he never handed over a plate of square sarnies to the late Queen, but she would have circular ones called 'jam pennies' as part of her afternoon tea - so at least she didn't miss out on the joy of sandwiches altogether.
The Sun reports that there was also another reason that one royal in particular was fussy about the shape of his food: Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. "It's also thought that Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, followed the same superstitious beliefs because he allegedly thought that eating coffin-shaped food was deemed unlucky."

This isn't the only food rule the royals follow, they also avoid shellfish altogether when they are traveling for their work on official royal tours, but they also tend to avoid it when they are at home too, if they have a full schedule. Former royal butler, Grant Harrold, explained previously that this is because there is a higher risk of food poisoning than normal when it comes to shellfish.
"When dining, the Royal Family has to be careful with shellfish due to shellfish poisoning, due to their work schedules. It is a very sensible move to abandon having seafood when out and about on public duties. We don't want a member of the Royal Family having a serious reaction to food poisoning. Especially if [they] are on an overseas tour. Therefore you will not normally find this on the royal menu."
