A RULING by the European Court of Human Rights arguing for harsher climate change measures has been slammed by British ministers.

Strasbourg judges said Switzerland had not done enough to tackle greenhouse gases and extreme weather.

Their verdict could now see all 46 nations signed up to the ECHR - including the UK - facing legal challenges over not pursuing tougher eco policies.

Britain’s Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho said she was “concerned” by the ruling.

She added: “How we tackle climate change affects our economic, energy, and national security.

"Elected politicians are best placed to make those decisions.”

Last year Rishi Sunak postponed a raft of green edicts amid outcry that they were hitting people in the pocket.

The PM told The Sun last week that the next general election should be treated as a de facto referendum on reaching Net Zero in a financially viable way.

He is already facing growing calls to quit the ECHR after it blocked the first Rwanda flight two years ago.

Reform MP Lee Anderson said: “In conclusion we have the ECHR telling us we cannot remove illegal migrants and now telling us we must carry on with this Net Zero nonsense.”
