Stacey Solomon's cheap trick to blitz mouldy washing machine drawers in seconds

Stacey Solomon had revealed a two-step trick for eliminating musty washing machine odours in an episode of Sort Your Life Out on BBC One.

The TV icon headed to Nottingham to help disabled mum Kirsty and her partner Taureen transform their cluttered four-bedroom home. In episode five of the first series, the mother of four told viewers how she was left with herniated discs and chronic pain following a tragic holiday fall.

Taureen said: "Before Kirsty’s injuries she had a pristine house, but they all know mum’s not as sturdy on her feet and can’t do as much as she used to."

As the team sought out clever storage solutions for the family, cleaning expert Iwan Carrington shared a nifty trick for transforming neglected washing machine drawers. He removed the drawer and pointed out the mould left behind, adding: "If your washing machine is starting to smell, this could be why."

Wearing cleaning gloves, Iwan poured a generous amount of baking powder into his hands and rubbed it around the mouldy areas of the drawer compartment. He then grabbed a bottle filled with white vinegar, and sprayed it onto the baking powder, causing it to "fizz up and bubble away".

Iwan continued: "Whatever the situation is, this trick is going to blitz it. Now not only will the family hopefully have less clothes to be washing, but when they do wash them, they’re all going to be smelling incredible." The appliance can harbour black mould due to moisture build up and often require a deep clean. If ignored, the spores can make laundry smell musty.

Baking soda can be picked up from Sainsbury’s for 59p, while white vinegar can be bagged for 99p from Morrisons. Later in the episode, the household guru explained how to achieve the perfect shine on your bathroom taps using an everyday product.

Iwan said: "If you ever drop a blob of toothpaste down the sink, don’t just rinse it away." Using an old toothbrush and toothpaste, he scrubbed away any hard water stains and stubborn marks in just a matter of seconds, leaving them "nice and shiny". The expert added: "It makes for a really nice gentle cleaner. Then just give it a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove all the toothpaste. How nice does that look?"
