Chelsea spent in excess of £75million in agent fees after splurging out on new talent during the last 12 months - significantly more than any other team in the Premier League.

The Blues have been one of Europe's most active clubs in the transfer market since being acquired by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in a £4.25bn deal back in May 2022. It's estimated that Chelsea have spent over £1bn on new signings since then, although both results and performances on the pitch continue to disappoint.

And it has now emerged that Chelsea have also outspent their domestic rivals when it comes to payments made to intermediaries following the annual publication of agent transactions by The Football Association. Given their huge outlay in the transfer market, it should come as no surprise to learn that Chelsea's spend of £75.1m on agents fees between February 2023 and February 2024 is by far the biggest figure amongst Premier League clubs. Manchester City are next with a sum of £60.6m.

There is a significant drop-off between City in second and the next highest spenders, which is Manchester United. The Red Devils paid almost half of what their neighbours did to intermediaries across the same period with a total amount of £34m spent. Arsenal and Liverpool, the Premier League's current top two, spent £24.7m and £31.5m respectively on dealings with agents during the same period.

The lowest spenders in the figures, which were released on Friday, were top-flight newcomers Luton Town, who spent just £2m across the last two transfer windows - a staggering £73m less than Chelsea. The Blues completed a number of marquee signings during the summer transfer window, including the £115million capture of Moises Caicedo from Brighton. Cole Palmer, a £45m signing from Manchester City who has flourished at Stamford Bridge, was another high-profile arrival.

Chelsea's lavish spending has sparked fears over the club's ability to meet the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules going forward. Those concerns were heightened when the Blues posted a pre-tax loss of £90.1m in the 12-month period leading up to June 30, 2023. Despite an influx of expensive new players, Chelsea are currently languishing in ninth place in the Premier League in another underwhelming campaign and look likely to miss out on the financial windfall that European qualification would bring.
