Max Homa made light of his Masters heartbreak by joking he'll have a hangover on Monday morning.

Homa, 33, missed out on his maiden major title on Sunday after falling short at Augusta. The American Ryder Cup star went into the final round just two shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler but couldn't keep up with the pace, as the World No.1 clinched victory.

Scheffler produced another stunning display on Sunday by shooting a four-under round to finish four shots clear of Ludvig Aberg in second. Homa couldn't mount a challenge, posting one-over round to finish tied for third with Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood.

Scheffler, who defended his title at the Players Championship last month, has now won the Masters twice in the last three years and is undoubtedly the best men's golfer on the planet. The 27-year-old's dominance is making it hard for the likes of Homa to get a look in.

Homa is known for his good sense of humour and made use of it on Sunday to hide his Masters pain. "What do I think tomorrow will feel like?" Homa said as he repeated a reporter's question. "I haven't drank in a really, really, really long time. We've been waiting for Sunday after the Masters. So, probably not great (laughs)."

Homa deserved a beer or two after his stellar display at Augusta this week. The American has established himself as one of the best players in golf after picking up three PGA Tour wins in the last two years and delivering at last year's Ryder Cup.

Team Europe convincingly won in Rome last October - securing a 16.5 to 11.5 result - but Homa won three and drew one of his five matches over the weekend. He's also starting to impress in the majors, achieving back-to-back top-10 finishes.

Homa's playing partner during the first two rounds of the Masters was Tiger Woods, and the 15-time major winner was full of praise for the upcoming star. He said: "He's got all the talent in the world... it's just a matter of time before he starts winning in bunches."

Homa also posted a classy message on Instagram after his Masters heartbreak. He wrote: "A potential 'too long didn’t read' upcoming: Winning doesn’t always come with a trophy. Winning is fickle. Learning, working, growing, and progressing is the dream.

"I’d love to have won a green jacket today. It hurts. Losing sucks. But, with the right mindset, losing leads to better. And my goal in life is to constantly improve and see where that takes me. Hopefully that’s major championships, and maybe it’s not.

"I’m OK with either knowing that I’m doing everything I can to make it happen. I have a sneaky suspicion it will, but that’s to be determined by future Sundays. Thank you all so much for the support this week. I can’t explain how amazing it was. I am so grateful."
