Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted he still views right-back as his best position, despite constant discussion around a move into midfield.

The Reds vice-captain is one of the most technically gifted defenders the Premier League has ever seen, but there have long been question marks over his actual defensive ability. A number of high-profile pundits and supporters have blasted Alexander-Arnold for his defensive work, with many feeling that is the reason why his England career hasn't been as fruitful as his club one.

Just before Christmas, former Manchester United man Rio Ferdinand claimed that Alexander-Arnold had 'forgotten the fundamentals of defending'. A year prior, talkSPORT pundit Jamie O'Hara accused the Liverpool academy graduate of 'League One defending'.

On the other hand, many have waxed lyrical about his attacking contribution. Now, the man himself has had his say when pressed for comment on what he deems his best role.

Speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, Alexander-Arnold explained: "I’d say I still see myself as a right back, I see myself as someone who can probably play in both positions, if needed.

"My focus, until I’m told otherwise by the Gaffer [ Jurgen Klopp ] is that I’m still a right back. I come inside and I play inside when we have the ball, but when you write the team sheet, I am a right back."

Alexander-Arnold has played a big part in Liverpool's title charge this term, but the Reds now find themselves sat third in the table, two points adrift of league-leaders Manchester City with just six league games left to play.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the campaign, Liverpool have already bettered their points tally from last season. Last term was a notably underwhelming effort and one Alexander-Arnold has since reflected on.

"As a player, a team, a whole, we went through a rough season," he added. "When people have such high expectations of you individually and as a team, it’s hard to keep living up to them.

"It’s the hardest demand ever, which is why I have so much respect for you [ Gary Neville ] and your team in that era on how you continuously kept winning and finding it. The hardest thing to do in football is to be consistent."

A tricky trip away to Fulham awaits Liverpool on Sunday as they look to keep their title hopes alive. However, before that the Reds must come back from 3-0 down to dump Atalanta out of the Europa League out in Bergamo on Thursday night.
