Cole Palmer was left stunned by Tim Sherwood ’s claim that it will take a “few transfer windows” for Chelsea to build a team that matches his quality.

The former Manchester City star played another vital role for the Blues as they saw off Newcastle 3-2 on Monday evening. His long-range shot was tapped home by Nicolas Jackson, while he also got himself on the scoresheet after the break.

Palmer's record now sits at 15 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for Chelsea this term. He is by far and away the Blues’ most consistent contributor to goals.

Speaking after the game, pundit Sherwood suggested that it’s going to take a while for the club to recruit players on Palmer’s level. Speaking with the England international, he said: “All you need is some players to play with. I know you can’t say that but I’m saying it. I just think you need more quality around you.

“For me, he [Pochettino] needs to build the team around you and the quality that you have. But that will come with a few transfer windows hopefully once he gets the right players in.”

Palmer stayed quiet during Sherwood’s analysis, with somewhat of a baffled look on his face. He then bit back by suggesting there is plenty more to come from Chelsea.

The 21-year-old replied: “There’s a lot of quality there, not just me. We’ve got loads of other players so hopefully the team can gel a bit more than everyone has seen.”

Palmer then doubled down on his claim in a further interview with Sky Sports by claiming that they are capable of much more under under-pressure boss Mauricio Pochettino. He added: “I think there is so much talent at Chelsea.

“The fans don’t see it, you guys don’t see it, but the way the manager works us on the pitch, the things he does with us, it’s only going to get better. I am sure that if not next season, but the season after, it’s a project and everyone’s young and we will see it sooner or later."

Following their win against Newcastle, Chelsea now sit 11th in the Premier League table and potentially just four points off of the European places with a game in hand. The Blues could also secure themselves a spot in Europe by winning the FA Cup.

Chelsea take on Championship leaders Leicester in the quarter-final on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Revealing what he expects of his side for the remainder of the campaign, Palmer said: "Yeah, we’re still in the FA Cup and hopefully we win on Sunday and get to Wembley again. We will take each league game as it comes, and hopefully climb the table and see where we finish."
