The Princess of Wales broke a longstanding Royal tradition with a photograph of her son Prince George back in July 2023.

The portrait, released to mark the young prince's 10th birthday, was taken by a professional photographer, rather than his own mother who had taken previous shots. The lovely snap of the future King sitting on the steps of Windsor Castle show him with his arms casually resting on his knees.

Kate, who is a keen photographer herself, typically takes a new picture of her children each year to share with the nation on their birthdays. This royal snap was taken by photographer Millie Pilkington. For George’s ninth birthday, Kate took a photo when the family was on holiday. It showed George smiling widely at the camera lens on a beach.

To mark George’s eighth birthday, Kate snapped the future monarch sitting on the hood of a car, wearing a blue polo shirt with orange stripes. The portrait appeared to have a subtle tribute to Prince Philip as the car was a Land Rover, a favourite vehicle of late Queen Elizabeth’s husband.

George celebrated his seventh birthday in lockdown when the family spent time at their country home in Norfolk. That year, the Prince and Princess of Wales released two photographs of their son, sporting a green theme.

The Princess of Wales had also asked Ms Pilkington to take the birthday portrait of Princess Charlotte for her eighth birthday. That image released featured the Princess cuddling their black spaniel, Orla, in a garden at Windsor.

A photograph of the princess and her three children released ahead Mother's Day had been pulled by picture agencies around the world after they believe the image had been doctored. In a statement the future queen admitted editing the image herself.

She later apologised for the "confusion" and tweeted: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”
