TOYOTA drivers discovered an innocuous button hidden inside the brand's odometers has a helpful safety function.

In a YouTube short, a Toyota Tacoma owner unveiled how drivers can use the small button to customize their dashboard on sunny days.

"If you guys have a Toyota, this is a little secret that not many people know," the YouTuber (@TheUnrestricted) said in the short.

Toyota places a long, black button next to the odometer behind their car's steering wheels.

"Usually, this [button] is just to change your odometer to 'trip,'" the Tacoma driver said.

"But did you guys know that if you just twist this little button, it can actually change the brightness of the screen?"

The button clicks with each turn, indicating the change in light energy the screen releases.

Clicks to the left lowered the driver's brightness, while clicks to the right made the screen brighter.

If a screen is in direct sunlight, increasing the brightness might help improve visibility.

Sunlight can make the screen appear dimmer or harder to see.

The hidden button is an important safety feature for modern cars, as manufacturers replace analog odometers and speedometer gauges with digital clusters.

Drivers may also want to reduce the brightness during the night.

Another Toyota expert, YouTuber, Steve Clifford (@TrainerSteveClifford), said the brand's drivers should pull out a dealer-provided tool to unveil several other customizable features.

While sitting in a Crown, the company's highest-end sedan, Clifford unveiled how drivers can find the hidden features.

"The hidden stuff is in your owner's manual," Clifford advised.

"Flip back here to the section that says 'customization,' and you are going to notice three columns."

Clifford said the three columns unveil if customers can customize a car's setting via the infotainment system, on the digital cluster, or at a Toyota dealership.

However, he warned that the third column might cost Toyota drivers extra cash.

"The manufacturer does not pay for [the customizations]," he said.

"You're going to be paying for it. So, you need to do some research and make sure that you're comfortable."
