Shakira has revealed she put her career "on hold" to be with her ex Gerard Pique.

The pop star announced her split from the Spanish footballer in 2022 after she found out he had allegedly been unfaithful. They welcomed two sons together but their romance ended up in a sticky split and custody battle over their kids. Shakira has admitted the break-up was the "darkest period of her life" after spending 12 years with Gerard.

The Hips Don't Lie hit maker first met when the footballer was on set of her official 2010 World Cup single 'Waka Waka' before starting a relationship later that year. Shakira has since revealed she gave up her own career to support her former partner. She confessed. "For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football."

"There was a lot of sacrifice for love," she told The Times. Shakira had suspected the footballer was cheating when she found strawberry jam in her cupboards, which neither she nor her kids liked, hinting that someone else had been staying over. Gerard later moved on with his new girlfriend Clara Chia, 23, after their split.

The singer said goodbye to Spain and set off for her new life in Miami - nearly 5,000 miles away from her ex. She has since been hitting out at Gerard in her new tracks. In her single Empty Cup, she seemingly called out Gerard, singing in Spanish: "You are always busy with so much business. It would be nice, my love, a little leisure.

"Relax here on the sofa and give me your attention. The phone rings, use your hand with me I know you're hot, but I'm much hotter." She also released Shakira Bzrp Music Sessions 53 where she made it crystal clear that she was referring to her ex and his 23-year-old new girlfriend, singing: "I'm worth two 22's. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio."

The former footballer appeared to have benefited from his ex's revenge song, as Casio to become sponsors of the Kings League. He explained his sponsorship deal with Casio during an appearance on a live stream of the Kings League, saying: "We have an agreement with Casio," which was followed by laughter.

The music video for her song El Jefe featured Lili Melgar, the nanny Gerard allegedly fired without pay. As well as popping up in a surprise cameo in the music video, Lili also appears to get a mention in the song as Shakira sings the words: "Lili Melgar. This song is for you, they didn’t compensate you.” Nanny Lili was reportedly fired without compensation after telling Shakira of her husband’s alleged infidelities.

Following a custody battle over their children and their £12m Barcelona mansion, Shakira gained primary custody of their sons. A 12-hour marathon meeting with lawyers from both sides tried to the bottom of it, with the pair not actually meeting during the process. The settlement was eventually reached, which including selling their incredible property in Barcelona.
