Neal Maupay has sparked controversy once again after clashing with Burnley players during Brentford's defeat to the Clarets.

Maupay started on the bench for the Bees, before coming on for the final 10 minutes as they were beaten 2-1. The hosts went a goal up early on after Jacob Bruun Larsen scored a penalty 10 minutes in, with Sergio Reguilon sent off in the process.

Burnley were forced to defend with their backs to the wall for some time after that, putting in a number of strong challenges. One of those tackles was from David Datro Fofana on Mads Roerslev in midfield.

Unrotunately, Fofana inadvertently caught Roerslev on the chin with his knee, which led to a lengthy pause in play. The midfielder was forced off after that injury, with Maupay left furious.

The striker was seen becoming embroiled in a war of words with Burnley stars Josh Brownhill and Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Maupay had to be held back by members of the Brentford coaching staff.

Eventually, Bees boss Thomas Frank was forced to intervene, storming over to Maupay and urging him to sit down. To add insult to injury, Fofana scored a second for Burnley a matter of minutes later.

The Clarets broke in a counter-attack, with Fofana released behind the Brentford defence. The striker stayed calm to neatly slot home and put Vincent Kompany's strugglers in control of the game.

Brentford did pull one back through Kristoffer Ajer in injury time, but they left themselves with too much to do. The Bees are now in huge danger of the drop, though Frank pointed the finger of blame at the referee for failing to give his side a penalty when Fofana made contact with Mathias Jorgensen.

"It is 100 per cent a clear penalty. Especially when they speak about you can’t grab and hold players. That was a murder in the box. How the ref and the VAR can’t see that is incredible," Frank fumed.

"That’s after eight minutes in the second-half, 1-0 Burnley and that would have changed the game. We have Ivan and it would have been 1-1. I got everyone together, players, staff in a huddle after the game and said I’m very proud of them.

"I’m very proud of the performance and mentality. (Let) nothing through us, it’s us together and we fight. We played an even game, even in the last part of the game. The effort and mentality to keep staying in the game was incredible.

"It's remarkable with 10 [men] against 11 [men] for more than 100 minutes. I think it’s a red card and a penalty [for Sergio Reguilon's foul on Vitinho]. I think the situation with Ivan [Toney] and the goalkeeper [Arijanet Muric] was a disallowed goal, I understand that."
