Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was left grinning after Phil Foden was announced as the man of the match during their 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday.

City booked their place in the semi-final of the world's oldest cup competition for a record sixth straight year after producing a dominant performance against the Magpies. Bernardo Silva scored twice in the first half to seal their place at Wembley for the fourth time in 11 months.

However, it was Foden who claimed the man of the match prize after another impressive display from the England international. And when that was announced over the tannoy, Guardiola could not help but crack a smile.

His reaction caused BBC commentator Guy Mowbray to congratulate Danny Murphy, who named Foden as the man of the match. After spotting Guardiola's smile, Mowbray said: "Little bit of a smile on the face of the Manchester City head coach. You’ve done well Danny Murphy."

Foden is enjoying an excellent campaign, having scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists for City in all competitions this season. The 23-year-old has also been called up to the England squad ahead of two international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this month.

As for City, they will join Coventry in Sunday's draw, which will take place after Manchester United host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea take on Leicester in the other quarter-final tie, with the two semi-final matches taking place on the weekend of April 20 and April 21.

Speaking after the match, ex-City defender Micah Richards was pleased with how City got the job done. He told BBC Sport: "They didn’t have to be (at their best). Total control, organisation, they all know their jobs.

"Doku had a really good game, Foden outstanding again. Haaland didn’t get his goal but he tried and tried, they are just a machine aren’t they with the way they can put these runs together. They have so much quality within this squad and they carry on managing to do it."

When specifically asked about Foden and his performance, Richards said: "He does everything right. The big question mark was how he would react when Kevin De Bruyne came back into the side. Even when he has come back into the side, his standards have not dropped.

"He’s done everything at City in terms of winning trophies, but it’s his performances. When you become one of the main men in the team, he’s got absolutely everything and long may it continue because we have the Euros coming up and finding a way to get him in the side where he can make a difference. Right now, his confidence is so high."
