A number of banking groups are closing their high street banks before the end of this month.
Over the last few years, major high street banks have closed hundreds of branches across England, Scotland and Wales. Banks say that this has been driven by a rapid increase in online and mobile banking, and a rapid decline in the use of physical branches. Those who have closed branches include some of the UK's biggest lenders including Halifax, Santander, Lloyds, and Barclays.
According to Which? there have been 340 closures scheduled for 2024. However, just last week the Royal Bank of Scotland announced it was to close a further 18 branches with sites set to shut in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Leith. There are currently also 16 closures pencilled for 2025. Last month, 56 branches closed according to LINK which keeps track of any planned bank closures across the UK.
Before the end of this month, 13 branches will be shutting their doors for good. Barclays is closing seven branches, Halifax is closing three, Lloyds is closing two and the Bank of Scotland (BoS) is closing one. So far this year, hundreds of banking sites have closed or are forecast to shut for good.
If you're a Lloyds or Bank of Scotland customer and your local branch is closing, you can check if a "mobile branch" service is available near you. These are normally set up on specific dates and times each month, however, this service is only available until May 2024 and it doesn’t offer cash or counter services. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers can also the Post Office for paying in and withdrawing cash, checking your balance, and depositing cheques.

If your local branch is closing, you should also check if a "banking hub" is open in your area. Banking hubs are located in shared public spaces on the high street, such as libraries or community centres, for customers who need face-to-face support. Each bank will take turns on a different day to occupy the space, but you don't necessarily need to be a customer of that particular bank to use some of the services.
