Eric Cantona believes that Manchester United can “come back as the best” under Sir Jim Ratcliffe - and also hinted that an Old Trafford return could be on the horizon.

The Red Devils’ icon retired back in 1997 after a glittering spell with the club. The Frenchman became a legendary figure after scoring 82 goals across 185 appearances - helping the side to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

Since hanging up his boots, Cantona has largely stayed away from football. He was named as the New York Cosmos’ Director of Soccer in January 2011 but that role did not last very long.

Cantona has suggested that he could be tempted back to Old Trafford in the future, but coaching isn’t on his agenda right now. Speaking to the Big Issue, he said: “I am involved in too many things I really love to be a manager.

“In everything I do I work hard to give 100% so that I am able to have the confidence and to enjoy. So I don't have the time to be manager. But maybe something else..."

Away from a potential role for Cantona, there has already been a huge overhaul at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed a deal to become a minority owner at the club.

He has already taken over the footballing operations at the club, while plans for a redevelopment of Old Trafford have been announced. Asked about how Ratcliffe could impact the club, Cantona believes the INEOS owner could re-establish the Red Devils at the peak of both the English and the European game.

He added: "For sure with Jim Ratcliffe I think we come back as the best. The way you drive the club is important. Ratcliffe, who is a fan of United since forever, is a great businessman of course, but is also very passionate about sport."

While Cantona has given his backing to Ratcliffe in the long-term, the Red Devils have a battle on their hands this season. Erik ten Hag’s side are nine points behind the top four, albeit having played one game fewer than their rivals.

Man United could still potentially end the season with a trophy. The Red Devils reached the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday with a dramatic 4-3 victory against Liverpool.

Amad Diallo scored the winner for Ten Hag’s side during extra-time at Old Trafford. Man United’s reward was a semi-final showdown with Coventry at Wembley next month.
