Harrowing footage shows the moment a became an inferno as a ripped through the venue – leaving five people in hospital and a further 22 others injured.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of the ’s life. But hours after saying I do in the idyllic spot in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, on Saturday, March 16 disaster struck. The lavish reception at self-proclaimed “most exclusive” wedding venue Hacienda Los Arcangeles saw 850 guests gathered in the upmarket marquee to celebrate the newly-weds.

But at around 10.30pm, a huge blaze erupted as people could be heard screaming and seen fleeing from the scene in the harrowing clip. Fire quickly spread across the tablecloths and onto artificial foliage, as the flames roared several metres high from the openings of the venue.

The events eerily unfolded to the backdrop of P!nk’s ‘So What’, as she teasingly sings “I wanna start a fight”. One man can also be seen hastily taking a final sip of his drink in a pink tie and navy suit trousers before seemingly evacuating the scene as sparks and debris fall from the ceiling around him. White tables and chairs continued to be engulfed by the blaze and turn to ash, as glass clattered in the background.

A total of 27 people were injured, according to local media, including 22 receiving treatment for smoke inhalation and five people were injured and taken to the nearest hospital for treatment of their burns – including the DJs.

“Everything happened in seconds,” one guest told Reporte Indigo as they described the hellish scene. “We thought it was lighting and when we realised that a column was in fact on fire we started running. The fire spread and the roof started falling onto us.”

Firefighters rushed to the venue and put out the blaze within two hours, according to authorities. However, there were reports that the smouldering debris giving off “clouds of smoke” was still being put out the following day on Sunday. The cause of the fire may have stemmed from a short circuit, according to reports.

Emergency services’ quick response to the incident was praised by San Miguel de Allende’s mayor, Mauricio Trejo. “I congratulate both fire departments, the Civil Protection, and the Municipal Police for successfully carrying out the evacuation to save lives,” he said.

Despite the fire, the firm that owns the venue has said it didn't sustain major damage and that work is already underway to get it up and running again.

It's not the first wedding day to be ruined by fire. Last year, a Wisconsin-based bride-to-be tragically died on her wedding day after a house fire broke out before she got the chance to say ‘I do’.

, 19, died from a brain haemorrhage caused by smoke inhalation leaving behind her devastated fiancé Logan Mitchell-Carter in May last year. The pair were due to wed at the Sauk County Courthouse.
