James Wade has warned the Premier League’s young stars that he is eyeing a resurgence to claim their potential crowns.

The 2009 winner and former world number two has endured a tricky few years. He has slumped to 22nd in the current world rankings. That has coincided with hugely impressive breakouts from Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.

The former, still just 17, has enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in the competition. After reaching the PDC World Championship final, he now holds a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Despite that, Wade still thinks there is time for the established names to enjoy a swansong. In his Daily Star column, the 41-year-old said: “The old boys are not done with this sport yet. Gary Anderson scored one for the 'old boys' last weekend when he won his first European Tour event for a while.

“Although I would like to say that at 41 years old I am practically a baby compared to Gary - I hope he's not reading this - in darting terms, we are the old guard when you pit us against the new generation.

“Gary proved that class is permanent with some of the displays which he turned in. Well done to him. The Flying Scotsman is back and I really hope to be following his lead again soon.”

Wade, the winner of the Premier League in 2009, was not part of the latest iteration. Meanwhile, two-time winner Gary Anderson was also left out.

There could potentially be a new name on the list come the end of the playoffs next month. Of the current top four, only Michael van Gerwen is a past winner.

Littler leads the way ahead of Humphries, Van Gerwen and Nathan Aspinall after his latest success in Liverpool. The youngster endured an uncomfortable evening with a less-than hospitable reaction from the crowd.

He stayed focus to fight off Rob Cross to claim victory. Speaking about the atmosphere, he said: "I knew what was coming this week and I was building up to it.

“I always engage with the crowd and the semi-final I was playing with complete freedom. I just felt comfortable tonight. I knew what was coming and I was glad to win."

There now remains just three more nights ahead of the playoffs getting underway. Speaking after taking a huge step towards progression, Littler added: "It's been looking tight [for the play-off places] the last few weeks but I'm glad to win and be clear of it. I'm happy to push myself away from the other people but I know it's going to be tight for the other bunch."
