TV chef James Martin has spoken candidly about his health following a recent operation to remove facial cancer - with a poignant mantra we could all live by.

The 51-year-old was first diagnosed with cancer in 2017, opening up to fans about his personal journey in June last year, and has since had to undergo regular treatments. In November, Malton-born James revealed that he'd been going through a lot of s**t with cancer', but would be 'getting it sorted' at the end of the following month.

At an event attended by Liverpool Echo, the former Saturday Kitchen presenter told fans he'd be 'going on a little bit of a break to get that sorted', promising to be 'back fighting at the end of February'.

Now, in a recent interview on Lorraine, James offered a rare health update to host Lorraine Kelly - revealing the powerful three words that have helped see him through this difficult time.

When asked how he was feeling following the surgery, James responded on a positive note, remarking that it was now a case of 'onwards and upwards'. James shared: "Yes, the stitches have fallen out. As you know, the last time I was on, I was in the middle of operations. As we speak, the stitches have fallen out of my body at the moment and that's all clear. Onwards and upwards!" Cheered by the update, Lorraine responded: "I'm really pleased, it's great, great news!"

This Morning star James first opened up about his diagnosis after apologising for his foul-mouthed rant on the set of an ITV show, which was secretly recorded and made public. James, who stood accused of 'bullying and intimidating behaviour' by crew members, released a statement in response admitting he "was shocked by what had happened and on reflection acknowledges he responded emotionally."

Taking to social media platform X - formerly known as Twitter - James explained that he'd been going through an extremely tough time at the beginning of 2018, when the incident occurred. James tweeted: "The end of 2017 was one of the most fraught and difficult periods of my life.

"I was dealing with the death of my last living grandparent, my grandfather, and on account of work commitments I could not attend his funeral. Later that month I was burgled at night by a team of masked men, who entered my house while my partner Louise was at home alone and I was away working. I was devastated that she had to go through alone.

"I was then diagnosed with cancer on my face and I had to have surgery, which I couldn't do until two days before Christmas when we had finished filming. Since then it has returned on several occasions and I have to have regular treatments.

"After all this stress I was in a very emotional state, and when after filming in early January 2018 I discovered my home had been flooded while filming, I was extremely upset. I can only say I am human and following a build-up of personal life pressure, I admit that I overreacted regarding the damage to my home."

Blue Marlin TV - the production company connected to many of James' projects - shared the following statement with the Mirror at the time: "An unfortunate incident occurred after filming James Martin's Saturday Morning in 2018 where James' home was badly damaged. Blue Marlin Television accepted responsibility. James was shocked by what had happened and on reflection acknowledges he responded emotionally, which he wholly regrets.

"James apologises for any offence or upset caused, as he did at the time to the crew involved. Following this and some issues filming James Martin's Spanish Adventures, James and Blue Marlin Television agree that lessons have been learned which have been discussed with members of the team and with ITV."

You can catch James Martin's Saturday Morning today (April 27) at 9:30am on ITV1.
