More human remains have been found at a Greater Manchester beauty spot of a man now believed to be from Salford and aged in his 60s.

A major investigation was launched on April 4 after a passer-by found a lower back, buttocks and a thigh wrapped in multiple sheets of cellophane at Kersal Dale, Salford. A 12-day search of the area commenced, with a huge cordon in place and search teams out for almost two weeks in a bid to identify the victim.

And over the weekend, four separate police cordons were put in place at Blackleach Country Park in Walkden, Worsley Road in Winton, Linnyshaw Colliery Wood also in Salford and Mitchell Street in Bury. Greater Manchester Police said "new intelligence" had been uncovered with significant "breakthroughs" made in the investigation.

Two men, aged 42 and 68, who were arrested earlier this week remain in custody and they are thought to be known to one another. Giving a new update to reporters at a press conference from the scene at Blackleach Country Park on Sunday, Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes said that further human remains had been discovered.

Police have also revealed that the victim is thought to be a man in his 60s from Salford. Although formal ID has not yet taken place, his family have been informed of the discovery and are currently being supported by specialist officers. It is expected identification will take place within the next week.

DSI Hughes said that it is thought the victim was residing in the same house as the suspects. It was also revealed that the victim had likely died at a property on Worsley Road, Winton, in late March. Police are keeping an "open mind" with regards to the investigation but are not currently looking for any other suspects and said they are 'confident' that they have the right men in custody to be questioned.

DSI Hughes previously said that they were going through hundreds of hours of CCTV in a "painstaking" investigation. He said: “As we close the net further on this investigation and uncover more intelligence, I want to reassure our communities we are doing everything in our power to ensure we obtain every available bit of available evidence.

“Our investigation so far has been a far-reaching and painstaking process, trawling through hundreds of hours of CCTV alongside recording several accounts from the public around the circumstances. The four scenes in place are to make sure we investigate thoroughly and continue with our good progress and remain committed on keeping you updated as and when we make further developments.”

Mr Hughes said the force were still appealing to local communities for anything suspicious they may have seen, heard or witnessed in the crime scene areas. Anyone with information should call 101, quoting log number 2695 of 04/04/2024, and information can also be passed on anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
