The New Saints have been brutally mocked by Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal after the Welsh club lost in the final of the Scottish Challenge Cup on Sunday.
TNS suffered a 2-1 defeat by Airdrieonians in the final of the competition. Ben Clark gave the Oswestry-based side the lead before the Scottish Championship outfit produced a fine comeback and scored twice through Liam McStavrick and Nikolay Todorov to win the match.
Fans of Al-Hilal - who boast the likes of Neymar, Alexsandar Mitrovic and Ruben Neves in their squad - were overjoyed and delighted with the result, due to a bizarre rivalry with TNS. The feud is centred around a dispute for the Guinness World Record for the most wins in a row.
TNS claimed they had secured a record-equalling 27th win on the bounce after beating Newtown 1-0 last weekend. However, the Welsh club were later told that it doesn't officially qualify because their fourth-round tie against East Fife went to penalties near the start of the run back in October.
Al-Hilal took the record legitimately with their 28th successive win on March 12, which came against Al-Ittihad, and have since extended that run to 29 following a 2-1 victory over Damac before the international break. Supporters of the Saudi giants were quick to taunt TNS after defeat - their first since August.
SPFL club's 'charcoal sausage roll' leaves fans speechlessSeveral Al-Hilal fans flooded TNS' full-time social media tweet with laughing emojis, while others sent brief messages. One said: "You will not become Al-Hilal," while another wrote: "Being in a competition with Al-Hilal, it's too hard." A third admitted: "You tried to chase Al-Hilal and everyone who chased this club is losing."
Another fan said Al-Hilal were "always first" and told TNS to stay away from the "big world." another fan, meanwhile, posted a graphic of the longest-winning streaks in world football, which includes TNS twice but not on top, with Al-Hilal taking that accolade as boss Jorge Jesus also featured a lot.
Some other supporters were bewildered to see Al-Hilal fans in the comments section. "Didn't have TNS and Al Hilal becoming a rivalry on my 2024 bingo card," one said. Another admitted: "A club who has the likes of Neymar beefing with a little Welsh league side is absolutely hilarious."
The last time Al-Hilal failed to win a game was during a 1-1 draw against Navbahor in the AFC Champions League on September 18. Their most recent defeat came against Al-Nassr in the Arab Club Champions Cup a month prior. Al-Hilal are dominating the Saudi Pro League and sit 12 points clear at the top of the table.
