Dramatic video shows the moment smoke starts pouring out of a Carnival cruise exhaust after a fire broke out on the ship - leaving passengers terrified.

The shocking footage shows the funnel engulfed in flames on the Cruise ship as it was on its voyage in the Bahamas. Cruise ship officials reported the fire broke around 3.15pm on Saturday, March 23, and a tannoy announcement stated that the vessel was turned towards the heavy rain in the area to put out the flames.

Passenger Heath Barnes, of Woodsboro, Maryland, was informed of the fire by his nephew who came running towards his cabin. He said: "I am travelling with my nephew and his two friends and they came running into the cabin and said the ship is on fire.

"I thought they were giving me a hard time but I got up and went out on the balcony and sure enough the flames and smoke was pouring out of the tail. This is my 18th cruise with Carnival and this was the most interesting one. It’s not their fault, it’s mother nature."

Heath told CNN was reading on the upper decks of the cruise ship in between bouts of rain when he suddenly experienced "the loudest thunder and lightning I have ever heard." Other eyewitnesses also reported that the ship may have been struck by lightning, but that has not been confirmed.

The fire comes after two crew members on board a Holland America cruise ship died while also out in the Bahamas this week, according to officials. The two workers on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam tragically passed away on Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it called at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on the ship when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A system. "We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely sombre."

The captain's voice broke as he announced the tragic deaths, she revealed. "He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were cancelled, joyous events were cancelled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."
