Too lenient on hackers

The Government’s feeble response to cyberattacks by Chinese state-affiliated hackers was perfectly summed up by ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith: “Like an elephant giving birth to a mouse.”

Deputy PM Oliver Dowden emitted a lot of sound and fury but all the Government ended up doing was slapping Beijing on the wrist with the diplomatic equivalent of a lettuce leaf. Given the seriousness of the offence – the electoral register was hacked and emails of MPs and peers targeted – sanctioning just two people and one company was no deterrent.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak might be right for once – the economic and emerging military powerhouse must be treated as a challenge rather than a threat, if Britain wants to exert any influence over China in matters such as trade, human rights and climate change. The very limited sanctions imposed are a sign of weakness. Waving a white flag is no warning at all to Beijing.

Inspiring Kate

THE uptick in visits to an NHS cancer website immediately after the Princess of Wales revealed she is receiving chemotherapy will certainly help save lives. Catching cancer early, as we’re told happened both with Kate and the King, hugely improves survivability as treatment begins sooner.

This is why we should all be aware of the symptoms and check our bodies regularly. The Kate Effect, clicks on NHS England pages increasing five-fold, is welcome. But at 2,840 over 24 hours in a country of 67 million, the total is still relatively small. Many more of us still need to inform ourselves.

Delusional Don

Donald Trump comparing himself to Jesus ahead of a court appearance was bizarre, even by his egotistical standards. Let us pray that this November there is no resurrection of the deranged former President’s political career. He is a stranger to the truth and a danger to democracy – and the world.
