Mind-blowing optical illusion means letters change colours - eye expert says why

Everybody remembers 'the' dress that caused many arguments about whether it was actually blue or gold - but are you ready for something else to blow your mind?

A new moving image shared by Lenstore appears to show letters changing colour at first glance, however, this is actually just our brains playing tricks on us - and an expert has explained how this works.

While the letters move across the different shades of colour and lighting in the background, the letters remain the same colour, and it's seriously baffling. However, to our mind, this may seem like a different variation of the original colour.

It is no wonder this mind-boggling optical illusion can easily baffle viewers, but to prove it, you can take a look at the still images below, where it becomes clear just how much our brain can be easily influenced by the way it judges brightness and colour.

Roshni Patel, Optometrist and Head of Professional Services at Lenstore offered a more technical explanation as to why this type of illusion can fool people, saying: "We have cells in our retina (tissue at the back of our eyes), one called cones which judge colour and the other rods which judge brightness.

"They then pass information through signals via the optic nerve to the brain, where it then tries to figure out what we are seeing by what signals it receives. Certain exposure to brightness, patterns and colours can impact perceptions and that is what occurs when we see this colour saturation optical illusion."

If you weren't fooled, give yourself a pat on the back. If you're looking for more puzzles to do, why not try a few other brain teasers? Attempt to spot the strawberry among the watermelons. Or, if you're up for something a little more tricky, you can try to spot the animal within the zig-zag image. Or, see whether you have a 'highly intelligent mind' by working out the next number in the baffling maths sequence.

Was your mind fooled? Let us know in the comments.
