Kate Ferdinand has bravely opened up about her secret skin battle as she shared a make-up free snap on Instagram.

The wife of Rio Ferdinand, 32, always looks glamorous in her photos on social media, but has now revealed she's been "really, really struggling" with her skin as she shared a shot, which reveals her hyperpigmentation. Telling fans she had a "patchwork on her face", Kate explained the condition left her feeling "so insecure".

In a video in conjunction with skincare giant, La Roche Posay, which has been praised by fans, Kate says: "I started getting like a black mark on the top of my head and above my lip and the kids were like: 'What's that? And I was thinking: 'What is that?' It's something I've really, really struggled with. It's made me so insecure. Sharing a candid shot of herself, Kate continued: "I put a picture on my social media and you can see there's a like a patchwork on my face."

Admitting it "took a lot" for her to share her story, Kate concluded the clip on Instagram by thanking La Roche Posay, saying their products have finally offered her something that makes her feel "in control of her skin".

Hyperpigmentation or melasma is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin.

Kate previously said she was scared to reveal her struggles with the condition as she told fans about her insecurities. Sharing her first make-up free snap, Kate wrote: '“Kate what’s the dark thing above your lip?' Me without makeup. For the last few years even with SPF 50 & a hat, as soon as the sun comes out my face looks like a patchwork. I always feel so insecure about it & it really does get me down, I try to cover it at all costs."

The candid selfie won widespread praise online as many of Kate's followers thanked the mum-of-two for highlighting such a common, yet debilitating skin complaint.

Love Island winner Dani Dyer praised the former TOWIE star for her honest post, saying: "I’m so going through this right now, so glad you’ve shared this Kate. Meanwhile, Danielle Lloyd added: "Well done @xkateferdinand I get trolled all the time for my pigmentation it gets worse with pregnancy also thank you for sharing and showing it’s normal."

Responding to the messages, Kate said: "Thank you so much for all of your messages on my recent post, I really didn't realise how many of you have pigmentation/melasma too! Honestly, I was so scared to post this! But again, you have all shown me how sharing our insecurities and not so perfect moments can bring us together and prove social media can be a positive place at times."
