Martin Dubravka has thanked Manchester United fans after his season-long loan spell was terminated ahead of schedule.

Newcastle recalled the Slovakian goalkeeper, 33, from his temporary stint at Old Trafford on New Year's Day. Dubravka joined United on loan in September - a deal that included the option of a permanent move - but made just two appearances in the EFL Cup.

The Magpies inserted a clause in Dubravka's loan deal that allowed them to recall him in January. He is expected to become Nick Pope's understudy alongside Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie, as Loris Karius' short-term deal expired on New Year's Day.

"Hi guys, I have been recalled from loan at Manchester United and will return to Newcastle," Dubravka wrote on Instagram on New Year's Day. "Although short, it has been an enjoyable experience in Manchester and I wish to sincerely thank all the coaches, staff, players and fans of MUFC for their warmth and support during my loan spell.

"Regarding Newcastle, I have been delighted to see the club make such an impressive start to the season! Newcastle is my home and I will be back to support the squad and the goalkeeping group for the second half of the season

"As always I will give my all to the team and will contribute in any way that I can to hopefully a memorable season. Wishing you all a very happy new year!"

What do you make of Martin Dubravka's return to Newcastle? Let us know in the comments below!

Dubravka's return to St James' Park leaves Erik ten Hag short of goalkeepers. David de Gea, 32, is still United's undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, while Tom Heaton - the 36-year-old veteran - is expected to be their No.2 following Dubravka's exit.

There's every chance Ten Hag will not bring in another goalkeeper in January, as Heaton is a very able deputy. The former Burnley stopper is approaching 400 club appearances and has three senior caps for England - representing his country at Euro 2016.

United have been linked with Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, although he is not expected to leave the German side in January. The Switzerland international, 33, is out of contract at the end of the season and is a summer target.

It's unclear whether United can recall Dean Henderson from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest. Even if they are allowed to, it would be harsh to make the 25-year-old shot-stopper sit on United's bench. He's played in 15 of Forest's Premier League games this term.

As for Newcastle, Dubravka will challenge Darlow for a spot on Eddie Howe's bench. Former Forest stopper Darlow warmed it during the goalless draw against Leeds on New Year's Eve - although he could head for the exit following Dubravka's return.

There's also a possibility Karius will sign another short-term deal with the Magpies, as talks have taken place. Newcastle have not officially confirmed Karius' exit.
