San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has confirmed that star quarterback Brock Purdy will be receive a huge contract offer.

Purdy, 24, is eligible for a contract extension after this coming season and could be set for one of the biggest pay rises in NFL history. Despite earning only $1.9million (£1.5m) over two years since turning pro, and set to make another $985,000 (£780,000) this season, Purdy's salary should skyrocket at the end of his rookie deal.

Purdy led the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII in February, where they lost 25-22 to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. To put Purdy's current salary into perspective, Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the middle of a 10-year, $450m (£356.5m) contract with the Chiefs. That means Mahomes is taking home around £35.6m per year.

York told reporters at the NFL's Annual League Meeting on Tuesday: "It's a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league. It's what the market is. Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. I don't know how many players are making over $40m (annually) as a quarterback right now."

Currently, 12 players earn over $40m (£31.7m), with four pocketing more than $50m (£39.6m). The 49ers have previously reset the market and seem ready to do it again. York added: "When we signed Jimmy (Garoppolo) several years ago (in 2018), it was the largest deal in the history of the NFL (a five-year, $137.5m/£108.9m contract), for three minutes.

"But Jimmy was at ($27.5m/£21.8m per year). That's what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money."

Last season, all the top 14 highest-paid players were quarterbacks. San Francisco edge rusher Nick Bosa was 16th on that list after agreeing to a five-year, $170m (£134.7m) extension that ended a long holdout days before their regular-season opener. That deal remains a record for a defensive player in league history, showing the 49ers are ready to pay a lot to keep its team together.

But those decisions ultimately come down to the front office that York empowers to take them, with general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan entering its eighth season together. "There's a lot of planning that goes into it," York continued.

"I'm glad we have (executive vice president of football operations) Paraag (Marathe), JL (Lynch), Kyle. They're the ones that are going to figure out the details of it, and I just have to sign the check. My part in that is kind of easy."
