A teenager who died after being stabbed in a seemingly random attack has been described as "a bright and beloved soul" as people rally around his grief stricken twin brother.

Jason Jenkins, 18, who worked part time at Walmart was stabbed to death outside a store located on Northridge Drive in Rockford, on Sunday evening.

Timothy Carter, 28, a Rockford resident, has been charged with first degree murder. It is alleged that he grabbed a silver kitchen knife and a red hunting knife from inside the store before the horrific attack. Court documents say that at approximately 6.05pm, Carter reportedly walked up behind Jason, who was working at the store at the time of the incident, and him once in the back.

The Auburn High school pupil was left screaming for help, while Carter allegedly uttered a racist comment, according to witnesses. Police responders arrived at the scene where the teen was suffering with the gruesome wound in his back, Rockford Police Department said. Jason was rushed to Javon Bea Mercyhealth Riverside where he underwent emergency surgery but later died.

Carter was taken into custody and transported to the Winnebago County Jail and held without bond. He was arrested and has been charged with first degree murder. Additional charges may be pending, police said in a statement. Walmart said they were "devastated" over the death.

Now it has been revealed that Jason had a twin brother Jasper who is battling the devastating grief while preparing for college. It is believed that the two brothers were always close throughout their childhood.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Jasper through this tough time. In the 48 hours since it was created over $6,000 has already been raised. Organiser, YANA Mental Health Trauma Suicide Prevention Advocacy, wrote: "Our hearts are heavy as we share the heartbreaking news of the tragic loss of 18-year-old Jason Jenkins, a bright and beloved soul who was taken from us in a senseless act of violence while innocently working his shift at Walmart. Jason’s presence illuminated our community, radiating warmth, kindness, and a spirit that touched the lives of all who knew him.

"Jason, a proud African American young man, was raised with love and guidance by his devoted mother, who instilled in him a deep sense of pride in his heritage and identity. Despite the pain of his untimely passing, we refuse to let Jason’s light dim without making a lasting impact.

"As we grieve the loss of Jason, we come together to support his twin brother, Jasper, a talented and determined young man who is on the cusp of embarking on his college journey as he prepares to graduate from Auburn High School. Jason’s greatest desire was to see Jasper flourish and chase his dreams, and we are committed to ensuring that his wish lives on.

"By contributing to this Go Fund Me campaign, you are not only honoring Jason’s memory but also empowering Jasper to pursue a future filled with promise and opportunity. Your generous donations will directly support Jasper’s college fund, providing him with the resources and encouragement needed to follow in his brother’s footsteps and create a legacy of resilience and determination.

"While no words or gestures can ease the pain of Jason’s absence, your compassion and generosity will make a meaningful difference in Jasper’s life and help him continue the journey that he and Jason had envisioned together. Let us unite as a community to extend our support to the Jenkins family during this trying time and stand together against senseless violence and injustice.

"Thank you for your kindness, empathy, and commitment to ensuring that Jason’s spirit lives on through the bright future of his cherished twin brother, Jasper. Together, we can honor the memory of a remarkable young man and uphold the values of love, unity, and justice that Jason embodied."

Over 100 people have donated to the cause. One person commented: "I was Jasper’s third grade teacher and I know how close these two were even back then. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors Jasper!" while another said: "Jason’s death was senseless and so unjust. It brings so much sadness to my heart. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers."
