Naming a baby isn't as easy as it sounds as there are so many monikers to consider. While some parents opt to pass names down through the generations, others come up with 'unique' monikers for their little ones.
But there's one thing they all seem to agree on - and that's what not to name their children. It comes after the BabyCentre released a list of the 'Baby names at risk of extinction in 2024', with some previously well-used monikers among them.
A statement reads: "As well as BabyCentre’s annual top 100 charts and our hot picks for names on the rise, there is another set of data we’ve crunched – newborn names that have plummeted in popularity. We looked at names that saw the biggest dip in ranking from 2022 to 2023. They are the names that are at risk of never being used again, or at least not for a while, unless you’re thinking of reviving them!"
Boys
For boys, the names that saw the biggest decline from 2022 and 2023 include:
- Keanu
- Ryder
- Leroy
- Younes
- Aydan
- Griff
- Bowen
- Bruno
- Jameson
- Moses
- Nelson
- Preston
- Tiger
- Buddy
- Hansel
- Luigi
- Matthias
- Miller
- Raffy
- Roscoe
The statement adds: "American boys' names seem to be falling out of favour the most. Keanu, Ryder, Leroy, Nelson, Buddy, and Tiger are all endangered. And even Preston has been teetering on the edge of extinction for the past decade, despite (or maybe because of!) the ongoing popularity of US YouTuber Preston Arsement (PrestonPlayz)."

Girls
For girls, the names that saw the biggest decline from 2022 and 2023 include:
- Flo
- Maira
- Vivienne
- Zahraa
- Alyssia
- Deema
- Kiera
- Latifa
- Nihira
- Peggy
- Tianna
- Anita
- Bailey
- Elyse
- Indiana
- Renee

The statement adds: "For the girls’ names at risk of extinction, it seems the alternative spellings are taking a hit. While some parents love to keep things interesting with a spelling that is uniquely theirs, it seems some variations are on their way out! Zahraa was rising in 2021, but saw a huge dip from 2022 to 2023. And other spellings that stray from the traditional are also in decline with Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse also losing popularity in 2023."
