Mauricio Pochettino has demanded an investigation into Chelsea’s injury crisis amid fears that Thiago Silva could have played his final game for the club.

The Blues have been beset by a host of problems throughout the Argentine’s debut campaign. Christopher Nkunku, Reece James, Wesley Fofana and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez are among those to have suffered from long-term injuries this season.

Chelsea could potentially have up to 14 players ruled out for Thursday evening’s showdown with London rivals Tottenham. Ahead of meeting his former side, Pochettino wants answers as to why so many of his key players have been struck down this term.

“I need to be honest,” he said. “What I can say is that always in a new process and new structure, (there are) things we can do better, of course. We all feel the responsibility. We can do better.

“Too many circumstances have happened. It’s difficult to explain with one word or in one sentence. Of course we are working on trying to improve. We have an amazing staff – medical staff, coaching staff. They have experience in managing clubs and being in this business.

“When some circumstances arrive, sometimes it can happen. We need to now, until the end of the season, put all the information on the table and try to be better next season.

“We need to improve in communication, dynamics, strategy. Everything to do with our knowledge to improve and co-ordinate better.

“The quality is here. It happens sometimes with a team. Why do they not perform? We are assessing why. It’s too many things that are all together today. That’s why we’re suffering so many injuries.”

Veteran defender Thiago Silva has been one of the players to pick up a problem ahead of Thursday’s clash with Spurs. The Brazilian has already announced he will be leaving the club this summer at the end of his contract.

With under two weeks remaining of the current campaign, Silva could potentially have played his final game for the Blues due to a groin issue. Pochettino made sure to pay him a touching tribute despite doubts over the defender’s fitness.

“He’s an amazing guy and amazing professional,” Pochettino added. “Playing until nearly 40 years old is an amazing career.

“Of course the players, the fans and club are going to miss him. But he’s happy, he’s so proud of his career here at Chelsea. We wish him the best because he deserves the best.”
