Jose Mourinho believes Ruben Amorim will be a success wherever he goes despite seeing a Premier League move collapse.

The Sporting Lisbon head coach was linked with becoming Jurgen Klopp ’s successor at Liverpool before they agreed a deal with Arne Slot. Amorim then held talks with West Ham after flying into London.

Neither move seems likely to happen at this stage. But that has not stopped ex-Chelsea and Manchester United boss Mourinho from talking up his countryman’s talents.

He believes that he would be a success anywhere he goes in the future. Speaking to Mais Futebol, Mourinho said: “It’s also a question I shouldn’t answer, but what can I tell you? I like him as a person, I like him as a coach.

“I think he’s capable of coaching in any league and he’s capable of coaching at any club. But he’s in a good league and he’s at a great club.

“It’s his decision and it will be, or not, up to the clubs that want him or don’t want him or want to convince him, with more or less arguments. What’s clear from me is that I like the person and I like the coach.”

Amorim still has over two years left to run on his contract with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon. It has been reported that it would take £12.8m to prize him out of that deal this summer.

Amorim recently staged an apology to Sporting fans after seeing a move to West Ham collapse. Speaking in a press conference, he said: “The trip, the timing was completely wrong.

“I didn’t think so at the time but it was wrong, especially when I’m so demanding of my players, and I’m always the first to say that the problems of individuals can’t take over the team, and I’ve taken players out of the team for much less.

“It was my fault, I have to accept that and live with it. I didn’t think it was so bad at the time but thinking back on it it’s very clear. I’ve explained this with the players, the staff, but most important now is to carry on.

“I’m using the conference here to say sorry to the Sporting fans, the staff and above all to say sorry publicly to the players for the mistake that I made.”

While Amorim will stay at Sporting for the time being, compatriot Mourinho is still looking for his next job. He has been out of work since leaving Roma.
