It’s not just that this latest version of the Supra is a handsome car, a more ripped Calvin Klein model than the dull amateur boxers that went before it.

But there is a cachet with the Supra that makes blokes want to stop you and talk to you about it.

Within minutes of pulling up at home, my neighbour was telling me about his pal who used to have a Supra.

“He loved that thing,” he recalled misty-eyed, presumably remembering how envious he was.

Later I was stopped in the car park by a BMW i8 driver who wanted to know what the performance figures were.

It was honed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division – hence the GR.

 Toyota says this muscular machine – which borrows a number of bits from the BMW Z4 – is “conceived as a sports car in its purest form, with no compromise”.

And that feels true from the second you get in it – or try to. It has that comforting discomfort of feeling just a bit too small on the inside. But, boy, it packs a punch.

You could sit happily behind the wheel all day – or until you drain the tank.

The 3-litre six-cylinder turbo engine is a whopping 340hp with 500Nm of torque and sprints to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds.

It’s a chunky beast but agile and smooth enough to give you that confidence you need when you’re belting around in a two-seat sports car.

You could sit happily behind the wheel all day – or until you drain the tank.
