Hundreds of Real Madrid fans have been left stranded in Spain and lost thousands after falling victim to a Champions League scam.

The 14-time European champions travelled to Wembley Stadium on Saturday to battle with German giants Borussia Dortmund. Los Blancos were followed by thousands of fans to London - including 25,000 inside the stadium.

However, some have missed out on the trip of a lifetime after allegedly being scammed. According to Spanish outlet AS, 270 Real Madrid fans were left stranded at Madrid–Barajas Airport.

The majority of the supporters were affected by their chartered flight breaking down, while others were left to discover they had lost out later on. Some worked out that their tickets were simply not valid upon arrival at the airport.

Real Madrid supporter’s club Capote y Montera organised the trip, it has been claimed, with fans paying around £930. The flight was due to land at East Midlands Airport early on Saturday morning, but never took off.

Nabil Alturek Arnaiz, president of Capote y Montera, explained the issue. Speaking to Relevo, he said: “They notified us yesterday, around five in the afternoon, that the plane could not fly due to a maintenance problem. They have not given us more details.

“I have not slept a wink all night. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. It's been horrible. My agency has been ruined and this is going to hurt me a lot.”

While the vast majority of fans lost out, it was suggested that 16 supporters still managed to travel to Wembley after being moved onto other flights. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s final, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti urged his players to enjoy the occasion.

"A final is a final,” the Italian said. “It's the most important match and also the most perilous. You have to enjoy the fact that we're here and then you have to worry about what could go wrong.

“It's very close to the most important thing in football, which is to win the Champions League. There is the fear that it might slip away, but that's how it is. We're extremely happy to be here because it's very difficult to get to play in a final.

“Things have to work out very well: you have to have a little bit of luck, never give up... When you're in the final you're very close to success and then you start to worry. Tomorrow the fear and worry will start, which is normal. The more fear you have, the greater the joy of winning."
