Toni Kroos needed an emergency doctor after a night of intense boozing following a Champions League final defeat.

The Germany international played all 120 minutes in Bayern Munich's crushing penalty-shootout defeat to Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final. It was a second European final loss in three years for the Bundesliga giants and Kroos' first which occurred in their own Allianz Allianz.

While Kroos and Bayern looked set for victory thanks to Thomas Muller's late strike, a last-gasp header from Didier Drogba sent the game to extra-time and then penalties where the Ivorian scored the winning penalty to earn Chelsea their first Champions League title.

The loss in their own backyard was certainly a tough pill to swallow for the squad with Kroos - alongside his brother Felix - drowning their sorrows after the game. Speaking on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, the former Union Berlin midfielder said: "The Champions League final against Chelsea in 2012 - that was us drinking out of frustration. We were close to needing an emergency doctor!"

The Real Madrid legend admitted his worry had risen to such a level during the boozing session that he called an emergency doctor - at the behest of his wife Jessica.

The 34-year-old said: "It was not a good thing but at least there was a reason for it. I remember that Jessi then said: 'We can't do that now. Imagine if it came out that I called an emergency doctor for having too much to drink!'"

Kroos - who is set to retire from football after Germany's campaign at Euro 2024 - admitted his intake of booze on that night was to ease the pain of the defeat. "There was no other way [to ease the pain of defeat]. In the end I had to call the emergency doctor myself because I thought, 'It can't be allowed to get worse than this'."
