A new mother has admitted to "stealing" the baby name her sister wanted to use for her own newborn daughter, sparking a family feud. The woman detailed how she and her husband had decided to honour her late grandmother but it hasn't gone down well with her mum and sibling.

Looking for reassurance, she shared the situation on social media, writing: "About 6 years ago my Grandma Rae passed, and when she did, my sister said she wanted to use the name Rae for her daughter."

"Fast forward 3 years and I have my first baby boy. The name Rae kept repeating in my mind throughout the pregnancy, but when I told my sister, she completely shut me down. She said she still wants to use it and it should be used for a girl. So I didn't use the name."

  • The woman explained that following the birth of her son, her sister got pregnant and confirmed that if it was a girl she would be named Rae. She went on: "The time comes and the baby is born, she's a girl! But low and behold, my sister decides to name her Emma. She says that she just doesn't feel like a Rae. But her next daughter will be named Rae."

"Fast forward again to 9 months ago, I found out I was pregnant again! I had a whole list of names that I wanted to use depending on the gender of the baby, none of the names being Rae. My sister had moved out of state after having Emma, so we didn't really see each other during the pregnancy. She came to my shower and we FaceTimed but we were both super busy. So the whole Rae thing was never brought up.", reports the Mirror US.

"When I finally had my second baby, she was a girl! When I looked into her eyes I knew I had to name her Rae. I tried getting ahold of my sister to talk about it but she was on a work trip and was taking too long to answer, so my husband and I signed the birth certificate and named her Rae."

"When my sister called me back later that night, I told her the news. I thought she would happy that our grandmas name got to be continued since she already had a daughter and who knew if she was going to have another? But no. She FREAKED. She screamed at me over the phone, hung up, and blocked me. Hasn't unblocked me or even seen a photo of her niece yet and it's been 3 weeks. My husband thinks she overreacting but my mom says she has the right to be so upset. So I want your opinion, am I the a******? ".

The Reddit post caused quite a stir, with most users siding with the new mum. One person commented: "I would be tempted to say you were the a****** if she hadn't had a girl she CHOSE not to name Rae. After that, it's fair game."

One individual concurred, stating: " I would have said yes, if she hadn't had a daughter yet, but the fact that she did and still didn't use the name is ridiculous. The name cannot be that important to her if she didn't use it for her 1st daughter. She is being unfair and her tantrum is even more ridiculous."

"Also, don't listen to your mother. Simply tell her if the name was that important she would have already used it already and that's not your problem."
