A horrific crash sent a police van "flying four metres in the air" that left a car roofless, leaving onlookers shocked.

Emergency services raced to the site of the crash near Dalmarnock rail station, in Glasgow, at about 5pm on Saturday. One bystander described being frightening by a loud bang before turning to see a police van flying through the air and flipping around.

In a post on social media, the bystander said: "(It) made me think it was an explosion for the split second that I was lifting up my eyes to look in the direction of the sound. To my absolute horror I saw the police car flying four metres in the air turning over 360 degrees and landing on pedestrian crossing fencing and another car that passed below the police car and caused the impact it coming to a stop with airbags inflated."

Images shared from the scene showed a police van on the top of roadside barriers with officers standing nearby, the Daily Record reported. Another photo showed a black vehicle that appeared to be part of a sports car, with its roof ripped off.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told The Mirror: "Emergency services attended and two male officers and the male driver of the car were taken to hospital for treatment. Dalmarnock Road was closed and re-opened around 10.30pm. Enquiries are ongoing."

Officers placed a large cordon around the site of the crash, that stretched all the way to the Emirates Arena. Police previously warned drivers to avoid the area where roadworks were already in place beside an Esso petrol station.
