Redditor Tccoope shared how he thinned his dead stalks every year as they continued to "expand."

"My wife and I sell shoots off of our hostas every spring for $3 a shoot, or four for $10," he said.

"We moved last fall so our stock wasn't super great this season but we still made $1,000 - last year we made almost $4,000," he continued.

He explained how they made their sales through Facebook Marketplace and by attending art and plant-focused festivals.

"This has turned into a small side business for us at this point," he said.

And the pair has no plans to put the brakes on their planting plans.

"We're talking about having my wife quit her current job and build this into a full small business, expanding beyond hostas to other plants. But that's probably a few years down the road," he said.

It seemed they had found a way to sell their hostas and keep them too.

"The best part is we still have hostas in the ground, they just aren't overtaking the entire bed every year," they said.

One Redditor was curious about the size of their space.

"Wow, that’s a lot of plants. Do you have a big yard with a lot of flower beds? Or do you specifically grow them to sell?" they asked.

"We had around 15 to 20 hosta plants in flower beds around our old house," they replied.

"We would be able to pull between 25 to 50 shoots off of each plant almost every year, equating to around $60 to $120 per plant per season," he continued.

Their business has even turned into a family affair.

He explained how they have even been utilizing a dedicated bed at his mother-in-law's house.

"This year we primarily worked out of that bed as we moved in the fall and haven't been able to establish new gardens at our new house," they said.

"We had six hostas pop up in the spring at the new house this year, but they were too thin to take shoots from," they continued.

They also expanded upon their planting process.

"We did split each of those and transplanted another 12 plants around the house, so next season we'll have 18 plants to split from, and we are building a small greenhouse to start plants in from seed."

Hostas are a leafy perennial that come in a range of sizes and colors, according to Good Earth Garden Center.

These shade perennials usually grow between one and three feet.

They also produce long stems with blooming flowers at the top.
