Mum asks for 'grandma' baby name ideas as old fashioned monikers make comeback

Different baby names come and go with the trends.

And it seems like old-fashioned names are making a comeback this year, with many parents giving their babies names their grandmas and grandads could have had.

Jumping on the trend, one woman took to Facebook to ask for some 'grandma' names for her friend who wants an old-fashioned moniker for her little girl.

Taking to Facebook's Learning and Exploring Through Play group, she wrote: "My friend is looking for an old-fashioned name for her baby girl! What is a classic grandma's name?"

The post certainly sparked a lot of ideas, with more than 1,300 comments on the post. And there were a few 'grandma' names that certainly seemed popular amongst Facebook users.

Norma and Jean seemed popular, with one person writing: "If I had a girl with my last pregnancy I was going to call her Norma Jean after my grandma.... But i had a boy." Another added: "My grandma was also named Norma Jean. My son's name is Gene, but I named him after my dad."

Imelda also came up regularly, as did Ivy. "We have an Ivy," wrote one mum, as another chimed in: "I have an Ivy-Jean."

A lot of people said their gran was called Olive too, with one Facebooked user admitting: "I used to think it was right old fashioned but now I love it." While other names which were thrown into the hat included Dorothy, Betty, Esme, Dulcie, Elsie, Mildred and Mable."

The post comes after researchers over at SnappyWords recently compiled the top 20 vintage names that are apparently set to make a comeback this year.

According to the data, Cordelia, Julia, Betty, Dorothy, Florence, Henry, Oliver, Vincent, Patricia and Earl are the top 10 vintage names set to be popular again this year.

The popularity of 'old-lady' names can is thought to have been spurred on by celebrities such as Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds who have named their three children James, Betty, and Inex - names that have been around before their parents were even born.

Similarly, former footballer Frank Lampard and wife Christine decided to name their daughter Patricia back in 2018, in memory of the star's late mother. Even modern-living Lilly Allen has dived into the vintage baby name world, opting to name her kids Adelaide and Ethel.
