Concertgoers heaped praise on the young Scottish singer who was roped in to replace Olly Murs after he was forced to miss a Take That show.

Olly was due to open for the iconic 90s band at their gig in OVO Hydro in Glasgow but had to cancel after his flight suffered several delays, meaning he was unable to perform. He was scheduled to support Take That over three nights at the venue for their tour.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to announce the news, Olly said: "So sorry to everyone at the @takethat show tonight in Glasgow, unfortunately I won’t be there, I have been at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays (check my Instagram) and then a cabin crew incident our @British_Airways flight got cancelled!"

Later that night it was announced that Daniel Rooney would replace him, as he took to the stage to perform in front of a 14,000-strong crowd. Scottish TV presenter Ross King spotted the youngster performing at a hotel near the stadium and called upon the local to cover for Olly, which gave Rooney just 30 minutes to head to the show.

The singer revealed he'd met his idols 20 minutes before going on stage to discuss the songs he should perform.

At the gig, the elated singer said: "It's hard to take it in, it's really surreal. I'm just having a chance now to look at my phone and talk to my Mrs and parents and stuff. It was fast - 20 minutes before going on I met Gary and the guys and we talked about what songs to do."

He added: "It was great, I got some good singalongs with the crowd etc and it felt like they were really behind me. I know some people were not happy about Olly but as soon as I went up and had a chat they were brilliant.

"Ross [King] went up first and announced what was going on, he explained I was playing in Radisson RED when Gary asked him to help so he came up to me and asked me to play the Hydro instead. I still had 45 minutes to go to the hotel but what can you do with something like this – but they're really happy for me.

Nonetheless, music fans praised Daniel for stepping in for Olly - and for his exceptional performance. One fan said: "The wee guy who stepped in was cracking, gutted you weren’t there but what an opportunity for that guy - hope he has a big future ahead." Another person added: "Gutted for you Olly been watching your stories all afternoon hoping you would make it. Thank goodness we have Sunday tickets too." A third person chimed in: "Daniel Rooney from Cambuslang smashed it in your absence! Loved his performance."

Olly recently shared footage of himself in a car and told fans that he was on his way to Glasgow ahead of his performance. He later apologised for his absence from the show, saying: "So sorry I can't be there tonight. Gutted, but you're in for a treat. What a show [it] is. Gutted I can't be there guys, I'm so sorry. Nothing I can say or do really. Out of my hands. Weren't my fault. So yeah apologises."

The OVO Hydro also confirmed that Olly wouldn't be performing in a post shared on X yesterday. It read: "Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond anyone's control [Olly] cannot perform tonight (Friday) in Glasgow. We're very sorry for inconvenience."
