A "super-ATM" that allows deposits for multiple banks is currently being tested, with the first one operational in Atherstone, Warwickshire.

Cash Access UK, the group behind the initiative to fill the void in cash services, has confirmed that more ATMs are set to be trialled. These innovative machines will provide essential cash services including withdrawals and balance checks, as well as free depositing for customers of Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, Lloyds, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Ulster Bank, with plans to incorporate more banks soon.

Owned by major banks, the not-for-profit Cash Access UK is exploring various solutions to enhance deposit services, with these ATMs linked to the Link network and established in collaboration with NCR Atleos and NoteMachine.

Gareth Oakley, Chief Executive of Cash Access UK, emphasised the importance of such ATMs for UK consumers and businesses reliant on cash. He said: "Access to deposit-taking ATMs is vital for cash-reliant UK consumers struggling to access basic banking services and it's just as important that businesses who accept cash can bank it too."

Echoing the significance of accessible banking services, Martin McTague, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), highlighted the impact of dwindling bank branches, stressing the need for small business owners to have a secure way to deposit daily earnings without inconvenience.

He said: "The ability to deposit in a super-ATM that works for multiple banks is an important innovation and could make a real difference alongside the accelerated rollout of banking hubs and maintenance of Post Office counters."
