A statue of comedy legend Victoria Wood was toppled from her plinth after being mowed down by a people carrier.
The sculpture of the Dinnerladies star in Bury, Greater Manchester, was hit by the car shortly after 10pm last night, and was thankfully left in relatively good condition. The silver people carrier meanwhile was completely trashed in the smash, which is now being probed by police.
The cast bronze tribute by artist Graham Ibbeson was erected in her hometown's Library Gardens back in 2019 following the legendary comic's death in 2016. Pictures show it toppled on the floor on Tuesday morning while the car's front wheels were rested atop the structure, with the front bonnet obliterated.
Police sealed it off with protective barriers on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police told the MEN : "We were called shortly after 10pm. No arrests. Driver went to hospital with injuries but not believed to be serious or life-changing."
BAFTA-winning actress and writer Victoria died in April 2016 aged 62 from esophageal cancer. She was well known for her sketches with Julie Walters and Celia Imrie such as Acorn Antiques, and was once voted 10th in a list of British TV legends.
