SUMMER Game Fest is one of the bigger showcases for upcoming games, but the event’s founder has told gamers this year won’t be that good.

In an hour-long Q&A session on Twitch, founder Geoff Keighley explained how his hype for this year’s show is only an “8/10”, and will be smaller than other years.

During the session Keighley explained that there wouldn’t be a lot of new announcements this year, and the majority of games have been revealed previously.

The games featured will also be released over the next few years and will not be future releases for 2026/2027.

Keighley also revealed that much-anticipated releases such as Kingdom Hearts 4, The Wolf Among Us 2, GTA 6, and Judas will not be featured in Summer Game Fest 2024.

Some upcoming games were confirmed for the showcase such as Batman: Arkham Shadow VR, Monster Hunter Wilds, Astro Bot, and Delta Force: Hawk Ops, but the majority of games to be featured are ones that have already been released.

Dragon’s Dogma 2, Elden Ring, and Palworld will also be featured, but these are likely DLC announcements as the games have already been released.

Keighley claims that the reason why the showcase will be much smaller is because of the huge number of layoffs over the past few years.

The biggest of these recent layoffs occurred when Xbox shut down four studios including Arkane Austin, developer of Redfall and Tango Gameworks, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush.

Summer Game Fest will instead focus on smaller games by independent studios, as these big studios suffer layoffs.

Day of the Devs has been covering independent games for a number of years, and will hold its showcase directly after Summer Game Fest.
