The UK's cheapest supermarket for May 2024 has been revealed - and once again Aldi has taken the crown.

The discount supermarket chain has continued its winning streak in Which?'s monthly price comparison. Each month the consumer group compares the average prices of a shop at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarket chains including Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose to find the cheapest grocer.

The list compared this month consisted of 69 items including a number of both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye Garden Peas, Heinz baked beans, Hovis bread, milk and butter. The analysis also includes special offer prices but not multi-buys or two-tier loyalty prices, which are only available to loyalty scheme members.

The consumer group found that at Aldi the 69 item shop cost £121.56 on average across the month. Once again, Waitrose was found to be the most expensive supermarket chain with their basket setting you back 30% more at £158.13 - a difference of £36.57 compared to Aldi. Fellow discounter Lidl came in close second with a shop costing £124.88 on average - just £3.32 more expensive than Aldi.

Taking third place was Asda with an average shopping cost of £137.91, followed by Tesco at £138.84, Sainsbury's at £142.33, and Morrisons at £144.36. Ocade was placed in second to last ahead of Waitrose with a basket price of £147.64

Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: "Our latest monthly analysis has once again seen Aldi retain its title as the UK's cheapest supermarket. With food prices continuing to squeeze household budgets, it comes as no surprise that many people are choosing to shop with the discounters, especially as shoppers could save a significant amount of money by doing so.”

This month's average shop across all retailers was more expensive than the average shop in April. However, it's important to note that Which? does not include the full list of items it compares each month. Last month Aldi's average shop sat at £112.90 compared to this month's £121.56.
