Joey Essex has been branded "too old" to appear on Love Island, according to Mark Labbett.

The star, who found fame on The Only Way Is Essex, is known for appearing on a variety of reality shows but his decision to enter the Love Island villa certainly caused a stir. Joey, 33, stated that he was on the programme to find true love, admitting he was "extremely single".

Chloe Sims' younger cousin said he wanted to walk out of the idyllic Majorca villa "hand in hand with the love of my life", but his appearance has been met with criticism. Some believe that the reality star is too old for the show, while others have noted that he has appeared on dozens of shows.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, The Chase star Mark, 58, made his feelings on the signing very clear as he reshared a brutal post about Joey. In view of his 156,300 followers, the Tiverton-born Chaser reposted a tweet criticising Joey.

A post from the Out of Context Football Manager account read: "Joey Essex is 33, he should not be on Love Island. At that age I wouldn't even sign him on Football Manager." One follower responded: "What you even doing watching it, that's a tragic as this post." Meanwhile, a second penned: "Stop talking about f**ing love island u weirdo (sic)."

But it appears that Joey's appearance in the villa hasn't just ruffled the feathers of viewers at home. Chesterfield-born hairdresser Sam Taylor became the first Islander to be booted out, after less than 24 hours.

As Tuesday's episode drew to a close, Joey had to decide which girl he wanted to pair up with. He had decided the girl he wanted to couple up with was Samantha, meaning her partner Sam Taylor was single. But the shocks didn't stop there, as Sam knew as a result of Joey stealing his girl, he had been dumped from the villa there and then. With that, tears filled the villa garden as the Islanders realised Sam had been sent packing already, just a day into the villa experience.

Speaking about being booted, Sam explained he was "disappointed" to be leaving so shortly after entering. He added: "When Joey walked in I had a feeling I might be in trouble. Samantha is a stunning girl and I knew that they would get on." Although Joey's decision to enter the villa shocked fans, he also left his relatives stunned.

His older cousin, Chloe Sims took to Instagram to reveal she found out the news at the same time as everybody else. Chloe, who also appeared on TOWIE admitted she was "annoyed" that she was unable to watch the programme due to living in Los Angeles but couldn't wait to get home to London to watch it.
