Coronation Street star Jimmi Harkishin has denied stealing a pot of paint following reports he's been banned from B&Q stores.

The soap legend, who plays shopkeeper Dev Alahan on the ITV soap, has claimed the incident was simply a misunderstanding and it's thought the East is East actor is considering an appeal against the ban.

Jimmi, 59, was reportedly confronted by security at the DIY store in Cheetham Hill in Manchester after he was suspected of shoplifting.

It was reported on Tuesday night that the actor was taken to a back room where he was held for 15 minutes before being handed a letter banning him from the branch.

A source said of the alleged incident: "He was taken to the back room and held there for ten-15 minutes. The cameras were watching him the whole time and the staff weren’t bothered about who he was. He was treated just like everyone else.”

Jimmi has refuted the allegation made against him. The actor told The Mirror: "This was a misunderstanding over a sample pot of paint bought from elsewhere."

Soap favourite Jimmi had been acting for 10 years before he landed his big role on ITV's Coronation Street as Dev Alahan, making his debut as the shopkeeper back in 1999. He has previous acting credentials before landing his role on Corrie, including playing Jose Cuervo in the children's TV series Uncle Jack and as Dr Jay Rahman in the medical drama TV series Medics.

The TV star has previously been vocal in the past about staying on the soap. He told Mirror Online: "I just love it. I’m an actor and I get to act every week. Coronation Street is just this brilliant, brilliant programme, to work for. It feels like home and I never forget how fortunate I am to do something I love. I think to myself, ‘Is there anything I’d really like to go out there and do more than I like doing Corrie?’ The answer to that is, ‘No’. If there was, I’d do it."

During his long-lasting stint on the popular series, Jimmi's character Dev has been at the centre of explosive storylines, including a turbulent romance with Deirdre Barlow that viewers can still recall years later.
