This is the horrifying moment a 12-year-old girl was hit by a car and left for dead by the cowardly driver.

Jessica Frew was walking home from the park with friends when she was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa driving at speed along a street in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, before the driver left the scene.

Now her parents have released CCTV footage of the traumatic incident as detectives continue to hunt the offender, who left Jessica unconscious and lying in a pool of her own blood.

She was left with horrific injuries including a disfigured lip and severely bruised collar bone as well as a catalogue of cuts and bruises and smashed teeth which required dental surgery. Jessica was also traumatised by the crash, with her family saying she had been suffering from night tremors and anxiety.

The hit-and-run occurred at 4.30pm on Friday, April 19, with police still unable to trace the driver nearly two months on. It's understood the Corsa was seen being driven senselessly in the minutes before, and was speeding through a red light when Jessica was crossing the road.

The schoolgirl's dad, Robert Frew, issued a heartfelt plea with the footage as he urged people to closely analyse the details of the vehicle. The car also lost a wing mirror in the collision, which can be seen snapping off as he hit Jessica.

The 61-year-old told the Daily Record he had been "sickened" by the driver's selfishness, fleeing the scene not knowing if she were alive or dead. "The person that did this to Jessica left her for dead and is still out there," he said.

"I want to ask the public to closely look at the details of this car. Anybody in the vicinity that has seen it, please check your CCTV or dash-cam footage to get its registration. If you happen to see it out and about, please take note of the registration and report it to the police.

"We need to find the person that did this." Despite there being CCTV of the collision and a wing mirror left behind, police have so far had "no leads" and confirmed they were no closer to tracing the culprit.

"You'd think they would have several ideas of who it could be," Robert said, as he urged anyone with suspicions they may know the driver to come forward. "Somebody has got to have information about this and they need to come forward. It's dangerous that this person is still out there, they could end up killing somebody."

He added: "When I watched the footage, it made me feel physically sick. It made me ill but it made me furious at the same time, the car just kept going and it was going at some speed. Police told us they reckoned it was travelling at around 50mph.

"My stomach turned over the fact they were flying down that road - they could have killed her. The wing mirror snapped off at some force and went flying in the air. It takes some amount of impact for that to happen.

"When you watch it back, you realise that the driver had no chance of avoiding the incident because they were going so fast. The coward drove right through her and carried on instead of stopping to help her."

Constable Paul Taylor from Police Scotland said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this collision and is yet to speak to officers to please get in touch. In particular, we would ask people with private CCTV or dashcam footage of the surrounding area on the afternoon of Friday, 19 April, to check in case they have captured a silver Vauxhall Corsa."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2562 of Friday, April 19, 2024.
