A young mother has been imprisoned for allegedly trying to sell her two-year-old son in war-torn Ukraine.

The teenage mother faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted after claims she tried to sell the toddler for £19,000. Police in blitzed Dnipro shared an image of a wad of banknotes she reportedly was given, which Ukrainian media report was to "open her own business".

Police said the 19-year-old mum had tried to sell the child to an "acquaintance", but was arrested while being paid after meeting at the appointed time. The boy has since been taken into care by social services.

“Doctors are now taking care of the boy,” said a police statement. “The detainee's place of residence was searched and physical evidence was seized.”

Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne reports: “She did not want to take care of her son, so she decided to sell him and use the money to open her own business.”
