Wrexham stars Paul Mullin and James McClean have made a vile jibe at cancer-stricken King Charles as they continue to celebrate the club's promotion to League One in Las Vegas.

The Red Dragons secured their place in the third tier for the first time since 2005 last month, finishing second in League Two. It was their second successive promotion after winning the National League and now Wrexham will pit their wits against the likes of Birmingham and Huddersfield next term.

After their last game of the season against Stockport, the Wrexham players travelled to Las Vegas for yet another promotion party as they toasted going up to League One. However, while out in the United States, Mullin and McClean have appeared to take their celebrations a little too far.

The duo, who were pivotal in promotion from League Two, posed for a photo which Mullin then posted on Instagram with the caption: "And we hate the f***ing King!" That was then re-shared by McClean, who added: "We serve no king or kaiser but Ireland! Sue me". Both photos have since been deleted.

The comment was made just a matter of days after Charles was back in public duties for the first time since undergoing treatment for cancer back in February. The 75-year-old underwent unrelated surgery for an enlarged prostate before his cancer was discovered.

Back in March, Prince William visited Wrexham's Racecourse Ground and pulled a pint at the Turf pub, featured in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, with co-owner Rob McElhenney to celebrate St David's Day. Charles met Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney in 2022.

Wrexham, meanwhile, confirmed their retained list earlier this week, with the club confirming that eight players will leave at the end of their contracts. Ben Tozer, who is also the club captain, Luke Young, Dan Davies, Owen Cushion, Aaron Hayden, Rob Lainton, Callum McFadzean and Jordan Tunnicliffe.

After announcing the retained list, boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'd like to thank all the players for their efforts over the last few years. They've all played a part in our success and I'd like to wish them all the best for the future.

"The professionalism shown by all the lads has been excellent, and likewise those who have not been playing as regularly still play an important part with their attitudes and standards off the pitch.

"Ben Tozer and Luke Young have not had as much game time in the last few months, but as club captain and first-team captain they have showed great leadership for the Club.

"All the players leaving the Club go with our very grateful thanks for their efforts and contributions during their time at Wrexham." McClean has seen his contract extended, while Steven Fletcher, Mark Howard and Aaron James have been offered new deals.

Mirror Football have contacted Wrexham for comment.
