A woman has shared her embarrassment after realising she has been pronouncing her name wrong for her entire life. The woman, called Colette, says it took her almost 35 years to figure out her own mistake - and believes it's the reason why everyone spells her name wrong.
She said on Reddit: "I hated my name as a child because it wasn't popular but over the years I've grown to love it. However, I looked up how to pronounce my name today because I was curious and apparently I've been saying it wrong my whole life. I say 'kole-let' but it's actually supposed to be said as 'kuh-let.'."
Now knowing this, she believes this is why people "always spell her name with two Ls instead of one", saying it sounds like her name should have two. She added: "I feel so silly, I'm almost 35 and just figured this out now. Has this happened to anyone else?"
Commenting on her post, one user said: "I knew a girl named Colleen. I assumed it was pronounced “call-een” like anyone else that I knew with that name. She always corrected people and said it was pronounced 'Cole-een'."
Another user added: "I've only ever heard it pronounced as kull-ette. There's a long-running murder mystery show in the UK where the original lead detective's daughter is called Cully as a nickname - eventually revealed to be short for Colette."

A third user said: "I've never heard anyone say kul-let only kohl-let. I don't think there is anything wrong with the way you are pronouncing it. There is never going to be one way to say a name." One more user added: "I don't really think there's any such thing as pronouncing your own name wrong. If it's the way you pronounce it, it's the right way for your name."
